STYLISH HOME CENTREPIECE

DARK WALNUT KITCHEN ISLAND & CEDAR BARN DOOR

The Opportunity

Building a new home and sought a custom made kitchen complete with a walnut kitchen island as a centrepiece, drinks cabinet, scullery, laundry and a barn style sliding door to a media/lounge room.

The client presented pictures she had found on Pinterest of the type of style she wanted on her walnut kitchen island amidst a much lighter timber kitchen surrounding.

The Action

Kingpost Timberworks set about designing a 3d model of the kitchen island and presenting colour samples and pricing quotes for the client to consider.

  • Consulting on stains and finishes for the kitchen island focal point and sourcing timbers in preparation for the build.
  • In addition, the client had a barn style internal sliding door installed for a media/lounge room. This door matched the knotty cedar weatherboards on the exterior of the house.
  • The client suggested the internal sliding barn door be finished in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban or charred wood effect.  Taking a blow torch to the surface, effectively creating a carbon shield that protects the softwood of the solid timber door.
  • Plywood timber cabinetry was made to measure for the scullery and laundry and installed accurately and efficiently.

The Result

The result was a unique internal fit out the clients were thrilled to have achieved. The detailed dark walnut kitchen island set off a lighter timber kitchen and drew in the visitors' focus.

The barn style internal door is another feature of note, having had a charred wood finish. “It’s quite the art form in itself,” says Joey, “but it gives an interesting look.”

Absolutely amazing skills!

“Joey designed and made our solid walnut kitchen island and a drinks bar originally and ended up doing our entire kitchen and scullery,  laundry and an internal barn door in the shou sugi ban or charred wood finish. Absolutely amazing skills. Very clever guy.”
